Fatherhood is at a turning point. Fifty years ago the common image of paternity was of a distant, disciplinarian father whose value to children lay squarely in the size of his pay packet. Today, 21st Century Dad wants a closer relationship with his children and is willing to re-order his priorities to achieve it. At a time of considerable change, differences in attitudes towards fatherhood are becoming more visible. Fathers from groups less likely to be closely involved in looking after their babies are more likely to express a desire for greater involvement than other men.
