This guide is designed as a brief overview of U.S. higher education for visitors to the United States, Americans interested in U.S. higher education, and those outside the United States who would like a general picture of the American higher education system.

This publication updates the 1999 edition of ACE’s An International Visitor’s Guide to Higher Education in the United States, which consolidated and expanded upon the guides prepared over the previous decade. The guide includes a list of organizations and government agencies involved in international education.

It draws heavily on a wide range of sources, including the U.S. Department of Education’s Digest of Education Statistics, Open Doors by the Institute of International Education, and The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac. The text was totally revised in 1999 by Fred M. Hayward, with major contributions over the years by Madeleine F. Green and Barbara Turlington and assistance from Maura Porcelli and Lisa Rosenberg.
