Rosettes and rumbles

The image of the Rosette Nebula on the cover of this issue was taken using e2v chargecoupled devices (CCDs) mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. As a cover image it is somewhat of a departure from the usual aircraft or manufacturing process shots we often run, though arguably just as relevant.

I say ‘arguably’ because the exact definition of ‘aerospace’ is up for debate.

At Aerospace Manufacturing we undertake to focus on design and manufacturing technologies, as well as supply issues, within the civil and military aircraft, and space sectors. We stop short at ballistics, however, which some would argue should also come inside the ‘aerospace’ remit.

With regard to space, we focus on the design, development and manufacture of various systems, including imaging technology. In addition to making an informative read, for this issue this subject also makes for an interesting – albeit somewhat psychedelic – cover. Onto matters recent: it would appear (at least at the time of writing) that the turmoil caused by the US Air Force decision to award the US-European consortium of Northrop Grumman and EADS a $35 billion deal to supply refuelling tankers continues to rumble on.

Indeed, Northrop and EADS are now relying on a group of Washington firms to counter Boeing’s powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. While on either side of the Atlantic opinion may divided, both sides also share a common overall objective – to protect their respective industrial bases and the jobs therein – which few can criticise.
