Editorial: An all-round picture

As much as one person’s fortune is another’s misfortune, a process that can be one engineer’s headache can be another’s business success. To explain: take the story on page 23 where one aerospace manufacturer’s investment in a new 5-axis machining centre has provided significant production benefits, particularly the elimination of post-machining fettling operations to further reduce manufacturing process time and improve workflow.

Conversely, the story starting on page 29 focuses on a business that has been built up around introducing controllability and repeatability to the otherwise archaic techniques currently used for deburring operations. Particularly with critical aerospace components in their most expensive state that are often already behind on delivery, and with requirements to deburr often providing no definable measurements to work to, this was indeed a venture with risk but one in which the company in question has excelled over the past three decades.

The point here is that Aerospace Manufacturing endeavours to provide an all-round picture of what’s going on in the aerospace manufacturing sector, whether its metallics manufacturing, composites manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, design engineering or the supply chain. Importantly, as much as we try to balance our editorial, engineers working in the field too have to keep an open mind with regard to new innovation, processes, applications and ideas generally about production methodology.
