CONTENTS Visit Aerospace Manufacturing Magazine Website “At last, the industry has a journal that focuses on the crucially important but often ignored design, production and procurement elements of both the civil and defence aerospace sectors.” EDITORIAL “We need someone who can hit the ground running.” With the memory of my new employer’s winged words still fresh in my mind, like an over-excited rookie pilot on his first mission, I’m still trying to comprehend the sheer size and scope of a competitive and vibrant industry that in terms of design and manufacturing technology, knows no bounds! The introduction of the latest composite structures, increasing integration of embedded electronics and ‘green aviation’ initiatives mean that technology breakthroughs happen nearly as regularly as flights in and out of our busiest airports. It demonstrates, beyond all doubt, that the aerospace industry is a hotbed of continually evolving innovative product designs, full of creative people thinking not only of the here and now, but of the aircraft of tomorrow. We are continually amazed as one of the most dynamic growth sectors in the aerospace domain – the emergence of UAV systems – continues apace. Whilst the Wright Brothers demonstrated that man could fly in an aeroplane, a century later we’re facing a future in which aeroplanes will fly themselves. And I’m impressed by the way our industry strives to preserve something it has worked so hard to create, namely the aerospace supply chain. Faced with a downturn in economic fortunes and the threat of overseas competition, key protagonists are all pulling together in the same direction. In a bid to maintain competitiveness, supply chain improvement programmes like the SBAC’s SC21 help provide the glue and consolidate the long term future of the industry. Put simply, it’s a way of doing what we all already do, but in a more co-ordinated and efficient way. Long may it continue! MIKE RICHARDSON | EDITOR Bookmark
