AM New York, August 27, 2008

Newspaper - AM New York
Friday, 29 August 2008

AM New York, August 27, 2008AM New York: Manhattan's Largest Circulation Daily.

AM New York is a free daily New York City morning newspaper published in New York City by Tribune Company, which also publishes Newsday. According to the company, average daily distribution as of summer 2005 was 311,500.

When it launched in October of 2003, AM New York was the first newspaper of its kind in New York City. Its main competitor is now New York Metro, which followed AM New York into the market, using many of the same distribution and marketing strategies.

The paper is primarily distributed in two ways; The first being by workers ("hawkers," who sport a red AM New York vest) paid to station themselves near and around NYC transportation points, who offer the free paper to anyone who passes by; The second being distributed in enclosed newspaper holders ("honor boxes") located on the sidewalks and corners near areas of high pedestrian traffic.

Still in Hil’s corner
Moving on tough for many NYers
By Matthew Sweeney

No matter what anyone says, for many New Yorkers, Hil is still their gal. “She was what we needed,” Kate Rosado, 32, of Manhattan, said of Sen. Hillary Clinton.

“I love her. I volunteered for her. I thought this country is going to be where it should be. ‘We was robbed,’ as they say in sports.” “I’m not sure I’m even going to vote,” Rosado added.

The Democratic primary has been long over. Speaker after speaker at the party’s national convention this week have gone to great lengths to pay respect to Sen. Clinton after a bruising primary. Clinton even preached a message of unity last night and threw her support behind presumptive presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

Yet some die-hard Clinton supporters said yesterday that they only have eyes for Hil. “We won’t be voting for Obama, absolutely not,” said Darragh Murphy, executive director of the People United Means Action (PUMA) PAC, a group whose members gathered in Denver yesterday.

“That’s our unifying mission. We’re reaching out to the delegates to make sure that they know that we’re here.” ...

BRIEFS:
Lower court to recalculate Strahan’s child support
Retired Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will have his child support for his twin daughters recalculated by a lower court. The New Jersey state appeals court reversed the $18,000 a month awarded in the couple’s divorce and sent the issue back to the lower court yesterday.

Public to get a chance to sign part of 9/11 memorial
Steel bound for the Sept. 11 memorial is going on tour at Giants Stadium. Giants and Jets fans will be able to sign two 37-foot-long beams being used to build the memorial to the 2001 terrorist attacks before their teams’ home openers, while New Yorkers will be able to sign the beams at a spot near Ground Zero on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, the foundation building the memorial said yesterday.

NYPD to send officer to work with Abu Dhabi
The NYPD will soon station a liaison officer in Abu Dhabi, expanding a counterterrorism effort to work with overseas authorities to monitor potential threats against the city. An NYPD intelligence division officer will “share information and training techniques” with security officials in the Persian Gulf nation, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters at police headquarters yesterday.

Man sentenced 4-12 years for identity theft ring
A New York City man who admitted his role in an identity theft and counterfeiting ring has been sentenced to four to 12 years in prison. NYC wins tap-water tasting contest at the State Fair
Add this to New York City’s list of superlatives: the best-tasting drinking water in the state. The nation’s biggest city beat 150 other communities to take first place in yesterday’s tap water taste test at the State Fair in Syracuse. New York is one of the few major U.S. cities that doesn’t filter its water, though it’s building a $2.8 billion filtration plant in the Bronx. Most of the city’s water comes from reservoirs more than 75 miles away. (AP)
