AM New York is a free daily New York City morning newspaper published in New York City by Tribune Company, which also publishes Newsday. According to the company, average daily distribution as of summer 2005 was 311,500. When it launched in October of 2003, AM New York was the first newspaper of its kind in New York City. Its main competitor is now New York Metro, which followed AM New York into the market, using many of the same distribution and marketing strategies. The paper is primarily distributed in two ways; The first being by workers ("hawkers," who sport a red AM New York vest) paid to station themselves near and around NYC transportation points, who offer the free paper to anyone who passes by; The second being distributed in enclosed newspaper holders ("honor boxes") located on the sidewalks and corners near areas of high pedestrian traffic. Police: Husband drove drunk with wife on roof A Long Island man has been charged with driving drunk while his wife was hanging on to the roof of their car, throwing her to the ground and seriously injuring her. Diamond Mircea was fi ghting with his wife, Monica Mircea, at their Islip Terrace home around 12:30 yesterday morning, Suffolk County police said. He jumped into the car and she climbed onto the car’s roof to try to stop him, police said. The wife was hospitalized in critical condition. 2 hurt after being struck by lightning under tree Two men were hospitalized in serious condition with burns and three others were hurt after lightning struck a tree at a Long Island park. A bolt hit the tree where soccer players were taking shelter during a thunderstorm yesterday morning at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, police said. Five men in their 20s were taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Man arrested after telling police about missing gun A Long Island man’s report of a missing gun led to his own arrest on charges of owning illegal weapons. The man told police his Cobra .45-caliber handgun had been stolen, and the investigation led to the recovery of that gun plus a Tec-9 semiautomatic handgun and a Czechoslovakia model 75 semiautomatic handgun, police said. The Elmont man was charged with criminal possession of all three guns. Double-dutch jump rope added to school athletics The popular urban street pastime called double dutch, in which competitors jump between two ropes twirled eggbeater-style, is getting more recognition, becoming an officially sanctioned sport in city high schools. School offi cials say adding double dutch to the calendar should get hundreds of students participating in an aerobic activity.
