Newspaper - AM New York

AM New York, March 12, 2008AM New York: Manhattan's Largest Circulation Daily.

AM New York is a free daily New York City morning newspaper published in New York City by Tribune Company, which also publishes Newsday. According to the company, average daily distribution as of summer 2005 was 311,500.

When it launched in October of 2003, AM New York was the first newspaper of its kind in New York City. Its main competitor is now New York Metro, which followed AM New York into the market, using many of the same distribution and marketing strategies.

The paper is primarily distributed in two ways; The first being by workers ("hawkers," who sport a red AM New York vest) paid to station themselves near and around NYC transportation points, who offer the free paper to anyone who passes by; The second being distributed in enclosed newspaper holders ("honor boxes") located on the sidewalks and corners near areas of high pedestrian traffic.

Guv may give up office in plea deal

As Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s lawyers reportedly tried to hammer out a resignation plea deal stemming from a call-girl scandal, investigators said yesterday the governor was a repeat customer who spent as much as $80,000 over several years on the high-priced prostitution service.

Meanwhile, Spitzer and his family remained secluded in their Fifth Avenue apartment, while Spitzer’s lawyers negotiated a possible deal with federal prosecutors, sources told Newsday.

Spitzer’s major bargaining chip to possibly avoid being charged with a serious felony — such as money laundering or avoiding federal currency rules — is to work out an arrangement where he steps down in return for leniency, the sources said.

Prosecutors would guarantee he only has to plead guilty to a misdemeanor or lesser charge, and be in effect spared prison time, the sources said.

In Albany, Assembly Republican leader James Tedisco warned that if Spitzer did not resign within 48 hours, he would call for impeachment.

Privately, several Democrats in the Legislature and in the administration said a resignation appeared inevitable.

“If these serious allegations are true, the governor will have no choice but to resign,” said freshman Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand. On Monday, when the scandal broke, prosecutors said in court papers that Spitzer had been caught on a wiretap spending $4,300 with the Emperors Club VIP escort service, with some of the money going toward two hours with a prostitute named “Kristen” in a Washington, D.C., hotel, and the rest to be used as credit toward future trysts.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a law enforcement official said yesterday that Spitzer, in fact, had spent tens of thousands of dollars with the Emperors Club. ...

NY impeachments:

The first and only impeached governor in New York state history is William Sulzer in 1913. Sulzer was accused of misappropriating campaign funds and tried by the High Court of Impeachment and later a special tribunal.

Under the state constitution, there are no specific grounds for impeachment today, just a process that must be followed, according to officials in the state Assembly.

Here’s how it would go:

■ The process begins in the Assembly, with an introduction by a member.

■ The Assembly can vote to impeach by a simple majority.

■ The governor would then be tried before the state Senate and members of the state Court of Appeals.

■ A two-thirds vote from the combined Senate and Court of Appeals are required for an impeachment.

Impeachment can result in removal from office and disqualification from holding office again. It also does not prevent criminal prosecution.

In Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s case, an impeachment may be difficult to achieve with a Democrat-controlled Assembly and only a slim GOP majority in the Senate.
