Finding Dr.Right by Tonya Stephens

Recently, my 80 year young grandmother was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS). Her health has always been pretty good in general and breast cancer is not hereditary in my family. However her age became her greatest risk. Obviously the longer you live, the more time a cell has to ‘go wrong’, thereby increasing the risk as you age.

She chose, with the recommendation of her doctor, to have a lumpectomy with MammoSite® treatment. Afterwards, she commented to me how much the Care Coordinator at the cancer center had helped her. She assisted her in making her doctors appointments, providing literature about procedures and what to expect, and letting her know of additional resources available such as transportation, products, etc.

The thought of seeing multiple doctors can be overwhelming and without the help of a Coordinator, it may be even more difficult. Understanding the role of each specialist will help you understand how each will play a part in your health care and what questions you might ask.

Sometimes a breast mass is found by an Obstetrician-Gynecologist or by an Internist. Specializing in the care of women and their reproductive organs, the Obstetrician-Gynecologist is often a woman’s primary care physician. Usually a breast examination, pelvic examination, and pap smear are performed during the annual exam. If a woman feels a mass in her breast, she will more than likely contact her gynecologist first.

If an Internist is your primary care physician, he will normally specialize in comprehensive medical care and is involved in ongoing health care needs. A baseline mammogram is ordered usually at age 35 and then annually after age 40. If an abnormality is found or if the mammogram is questionable, you may be referred to a Breast Surgeon. ...

Letter from the Editor:

Wow! Thanks to everyone that made our premier issue of Amoena Life a success. Over 50,000 copies were distributed and the feedback from customers has been overwhelming.

So, it is with great pride that Amoena brings you the second issue of Amoena Life.

In our first issue, we introduced you to three LPGA lady golfers Amoena sponsored during the 2006 season, serving as our ambassadors to millions of golf enthusiasts. This sponsorship also provided many opportunities to inform women in local communities of a better quality of life and additional options following breast surgery.

In this issue we feature information about breast reconstruction following the surgical treatment of breast cancer. Reconstruction offers a woman an opportunity to have her breast cosmetically restored, but it may not be for everyone. Even with reconstruction, obtaining perfect breast symmetry is a challenge, and as the non-reconstructed breast changes with the aging process, new symmetry concerns may develop. The Amoena Balance products are designed to restore shape and symmetry and may be the answer to solve these post-reconstruction concerns. Read on to find out more.

Although winter is here, it’s never too early to start thinking about and looking forward to a spring or summer getaway. (I know that I am counting the days!)

This issue features several suits from our Spring 2007 swimwear collection. For the first time, we have imported a number of silhouettes from our European designers, making this one of our most exquisite style segments ever. We offer three swimwear segments—feel, style, and move—to better fit your lifestyle. You can see them all online at TheBreastCareSite.com or visit your local retailer.

And lastly, we hope you will love our new intimate apparel collection from Europe. The Tina collection features a soft cup bra, camisole and panty in a buttery soft, chocolate fabric with wonderful lace and embroidery details. A fashionably feminine collection for any occasion.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Amoena Life. If you haven’t signed up for your free subscription, be sure to do so today! We love hearing from you, so keep those cards and letters coming.

Regards,
Carla Fox, Editor
