Euromonitor International ingredients data shows that the region accounts for 46% of total global probiotic culture volume sales in 2008 (38,464 tons). It was followed by Western Europe (27%), Latin America (14%), and North America (7%). The region’s striking lead is not a surprise when considering that Japan’s Yakult Honsha was the first to lead the global probiotics boom. The company still dominates the region’s yogurt market with a 22% value share.
