Asia in the Schools: Preparing Young Americans for Today’s Interconnected World, A Report of the National Commission on Asia in the Schools, This report was written by Namji Kim Steinemann, Edward B. Fiske, and Victoria Sackett, Asia Society, 2001

This report contains an analysis of the status of teaching and learning about Asia in U.S. schools. The most significant finding concerns the gap between the strategic importance of Asia--the largest, most populous, and fastest-growing area of the world--and Americans' disproportionate lack of knowledge about the region.

The report analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of current teaching and learning about Asia and Asian American topics in U.S. primary and secondary schools, and describes models of excellent teaching and learning about the region. It sets forth actions needed to improve the quality and broad accessibility of such instruction, including a call to integrate studies of Asia into teaching and learning structures across the spectrum of disciplines and levels.

It asserts that this will require changes in teacher preparation and professional development, foreign language instruction, material development, and technology deployment.
