Janpan Reawakens: After years of economic dormancy Japan is once again demonstrating its resilience and adaptability—and playing a key role in Asia's growth In the final episode of Bob Newhart's sitcom in May 1990, a Japanese businessman showed up in Bob's quaint Vermont village, declaring his intention to buy the whole town and turn it into a giant golf course. The joke was typical for its time, underscoring Americans' anxiety that Japan was "buying up America," from Hawaiian beachfronts to New York's Rockefeller Center. Backed by the world's second strongest economy, Japanese companies bought into Hollywood and built auto plants in America's heartland. And branches of Japanese banks sprouted throughout the financial districts of America's largest cities. "Better learn Japanese," U.S. parents admonished their children woefully.
