This is the fourth edition of the Northeast Asia Survey, sponsored by the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies of the Brookings Institution.

Following this review of developments in the region during 2003, the bulk of the volume is composed of essays that provide mid-term perspectives on the crisis on the Korean peninsula, U.S.-China relations, Japan’s international security role, Russia’s role in Northeast Asia, the rise of a new generation in South Korean politics, state-society relations in China, military reform in Taiwan and politics in Indonesia.

All the authors have been affiliated with the Brookings Institution during the 2003-04 year. Most were Visiting Fellows under the CNAPS program.
