Bank of America (NYSE: BAC TYO: 8648) is the largest commercial bank in the World in terms of deposits, and the 2nd largest company of its kind in the world behind Citigroup. (From wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Welcome to the machine. The second-largest bank in the US by assets (behind Citigroup), Bank of America boasts the country's most extensive branch network, with more than 5,700 locations covering some 30 states from coast to coast. Its core services include consumer and small business banking, credit cards, investment banking and brokerage, and asset management. Bank of America fattened up by purchasing northeastern banking behemoth FleetBoston for some $50 billion in 2004 and credit card giant MBNA in early 2006. It later bought U.S. Trust from Charles Schwab for more than $3 billion and acquired Chicago-based LaSalle Bank for some $21 billion from Netherlands-based ABN AMRO. Keep Growing Meeting the Challenges How time flies—it is hard to believe that 2007 is half over. Here at the magazine there is a real buzz of excitement. All of us are proud of the first two issues of Business 24/7. However, that doesn’t mean we are sitting back, resting on our laurels. In fact, like many of our readers we have huge goals in the second half of 2007. We’ve been challenged by Bank of America to expand Business 24/7 and bring even more value to the customers who read it each quarter. More importantly, we’ve been challenged by you, our readers. Through your comments on our web site, bankofamerica.com/business247, and emails sent to the team, you’ve asked us to go beyond the surface of most stories. You asked us to be more in-depth while continuing to provide practical solutions and actionable ideas to aid you in the management and growth of your businesses. We’ve heard you and the entire team here at Business 24/7 welcomes the challenge. Speaking of challenges, as part of my job I have the wonderful opportunity to travel around the country and meet many Bank of America employees. The common theme among everyone I’ve met is that they enjoy making things better for our Bank of America customers. That goes for everyone—from the talented associates who develop products like Easy Online Payroll, Business Credit Express, and Online Business Suite, to the thousands of associates around the country who serve customers every day at local banking centers. They feel privileged and inspired to work hard for their customers. I think Mark Hogan, President of Small Business Banking, said it well in the last issue of Business 24/7, “Keep the feedback coming—as we learn more about the challenges you face, we can game plan to help solve those issues and make it easier for you to manage and grow your business.” I would encourage everyone to take Mark’s advice and continue the feedback. All of the associates at Bank of America welcome it. This leads me to the summer issue of Business 24/7. I asked the team to develop articles that would offer our readers tips and suggestions on perhaps the biggest challenge for any business, increasing sales. Our lead story “Fighting for Sales” (page 22) offers a wealth of ideas to help you increase your sales—and a few to help you cut your expenses as well. It is never too late to make positive changes for your business. So regardless of how successful or how many bumps in the road you’ve had during these first six months of 2007, hopefully some of our suggestions will help keep you on the right path or point you in the right direction. As always, happy reading! Lamont A.
