From the Editor

For 2008, how about resolving to prevent cancer? That’s an ambitious resolution and obviously not possible for everyone to achieve on a personal level, but it is absolutely a resolution worth declaring and working toward, and one that needs our collective action.

The first step in implementing this resolution, like any large goal, is to form an action plan. And the first step in any action plan is to gather information. We need to become more aware of why cancer has become such an epidemic and to learn ways that we can reverse this trend.

There are an increasing number of resources available that can educate us about the causes of cancer and outline things that can be done on a personal and societal level. One such resource is Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic, published in Canada by New Society Publishers in 2007. In this book, the authors present an urgent wake-up call about the environmental reasons behind the epidemic that is currently killing one in four North Americans. But more importantly, it provides solutions and is optimistic about our capacity to turn things around.
It is obviously time that we do everything possible to stop this epidemic of preventable illness, but it is going to take more than eating vegetables and stopping smoking. Yes, those are necessary steps for maintaining good health, but we also need to tackle the poisons that are so prevalent in our homes and schools and other workplaces. This is where we need to join forces to effect positive change for the benefit of all.

Cancer is a pervasive disease in modern life, one that has touched every one of us in some way. We have the power to do something to reverse its spread. We can find and implement solutions. It just takes resolve.

Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic (ISBN 978-0-86571-542-4) is available at bookstores or from New Society Publishers online (www.newsociety.com) or by phone (1-800-567-6772 ext 111).
