Credit market chaos, high gas prices, general economic uncertainties and smoking bans have all impacted key portions of the North American gaming market. Russian adventurism has Eastern Europe on edge, dampening interest in investment in gaming expansion in this growing market. Political turmoil in Thailand has not been good for the gaming business in that country, while its neighbors continue to work on expansion of their gaming markets. At the same time, the gaming industry in Macau remains strong and gaming in Singapore will soon become a reality as demonstrated by Robert W. Stocker IIthe many construction cranes on site at the government-approved gaming development sites as this column is being written. At the very least, all of these developments give the gaming legal fraternity, government regulators and elected legislatures a lot to contemplate and discuss as we rapidly approach calendar year 2009. The International Masters of Gaming Law and its members will play major roles in the trenches, in the print media and on speaker podiums as the gaming industry confronts the challenges facing it in the coming year. ...
