Financial Education Program Celebrates Third Anniversary
Flaherty Recently, Citi and the Citi Foundation celebrated the third anniversary of our unprecedented 10-year, $200 million global commitment to Financial Education. In 2006, Citi and the Citi Foundation invested nearly $32 million in 72 countries, for a total of nearly $85 million to date putting us well ahead of schedule. Combined, the Citi Foundation and Citi-sponsored programs have touched the lives of more than 3.5 million people worldwide.
Citi also introduced its first-ever personal finance book, The Citi Commonsense Money Guide for Real People, which taps into Citi's experience providing financial advice to consumers. The Citi Commonsense Money Guide for Real People shows readers how to achieve financial health by tackling the various aspects of money management through a series of simple yet effective steps. Citi employees provided content and expertise and Dara Duguay, Director of Citi’s Office of Financial Education, was the editor. All proceeds from sales will be donated to not-for-profit organizations and programs that support and teach financial education.
Financial Education for the Poor, a global program supported by a US$5.3 million Citi Foundation grant, is making great progress with the goal of helping more than two million people to increase, protect and improve the management of their assets. In addition, through Citi's volunteer initiatives, employees give their time and talent to promote Financial Education. On April 24th, 670 Citi volunteers in the U.S. participated in National Teach Children to Save Day, a financial education event sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, reaching more than 21,000 students in 28 states. We are very proud of our progress and applaud our employees’ efforts to make communities better because we are there.
During Citi's nearly 200-year legacy of industry leadership, we've helped individuals, families, entrepreneurs, institutions, and governments better understand how to use the financial resources available to them to meet their goals. Through it all, we've learned that when it comes to money knowledge is your greatest asset® and, in today's complex world, financial literacy is a critical life skill.
