Electronic health records are revolutionizing medical information and putting patients in charge.

Mary Adams likes having her health records online, where she can get to them when she wants.

“My husband visited the doctor not too long ago and got his cholesterol results by mail,” says Ms. Adams, a 45-year-old IT professional from LaGrange, Ohio. “He was really excited about his numbers, and we were just kidding, placing bets about whose were better. I had gotten mine within the past year, and I was able to log right in and see what my latest test results were for cholesterol,” she says. “I won that bet.”

Ms. Adams has been going online to manage her health information for the past three years. Using Cleveland Clinic’s personal health record system, called MyChart (mychart.clevelandclinic.org), she checks her laboratory results, schedules appointments and renews prescriptions online.

And in early 2008, she began participating in a pilot program conducted by Cleveland Clinic and Google in which she got to try Google Health (google.com/health), a secure online personal health record service that allows her to record information about her health history and the care she receives from physicians outside of Cleveland Clinic — for example, her dentist. ...
