Cover Story: Brian Crawford and Concept Construction: Building a Community For Brian Crawford, building is his livelihood. But Crawford knows that it takes more than establishing a reputation as a professional, responsible general contractor, to help build a community and an industry. That's why, in addition to being the owner of Concept Construction, a Lake Citybased general contractor, Crawford is finding the time to be involved in the Columbia County Builders Association (CCBA), currently as the president. Concept Construction, which has been in operation for a little more than three years, can handle commercial, industrial and residential work, with a specialty in commercial design-build and construction management. For the last two years, the main focus has been commercial, but Crawford says he still has an interest in residential development as well. ... As a result, he is not only active in the Lake City area, he serves as president of the Columbia County Builders Association. While he is quick to deflect credit to others, many Columbia County builders say that Brian, more than anyone else, is responsible for making that association a tremendous advocate for the industry, as well as a terrific community partner. We hope you enjoy this story about Brain Crawford and Concept Construction. Our Individual Spotlight this month is on Keith Perry. Perry Roofing, which has been in business for more than a quarter of a century, is responsible for many of the roofs in and around North Central Florida – a total of more than 8,000 roofing jobs. This is a great success story, and it is based on excellent customer service. In Industry News this month, we focus on the working agreement between Perry Construction and PPI Construction Management. While the two companies remain distinct and separate, we learn how when it is in everyone’s best interests, they can work together. We have several Association News pieces this month, and that is an indication that all our building trade associations are doing their part to support builders. There is a feature on Thomas McIntosh of ERA Trend Realty, speaking at the Builders Association of North Central Florida Commercial Builders Council about the space and land task force report commissioned by the Council for Economic Outreach and its long-term effect on commercial business. We also have a feature on a recent meeting in Gainesville held by the Associated General Contractors of Greater Florida, who brought in their chief economist, Ken Simonson, and Governmental Affairs Director Warren Husband to talk about the current state of commercial construction nationally and in the state. We are also introducing Jake’s Corner in this issue of Commercial Building Edge. The former Gainesville Sun political cartoonist has brought his pen to us, and is doing a great job of shining a light on those issues that need it. As always, I want to remind you that Commercial Building Edge is only made possible by the tremendous support and participation of our advertisers. Without them, this magazine would not be possible.
