Deadstock"Deadstock is a gripping page-turner written with verve and intelligence." — The Guardian

"For a wild ride, readers will be hard-pressed to find a better vehicle than Thomas’s bizarre multiverse; fans of cyberpunk noir and Lovecraftian horror will find much to enjoy…" — Publishers Weekly

Punktown, crime-ridden metropolis on the colony world, Oasis, is home to the scum of countless alien races. Stalking its mean streets is Jeremy Stake, the private detective with chameleon-like abilities he does not want and cannot control. There’s his wealthy client, Fukuda, whose company makes synthetic life forms as playthings for the rich. Then there’s Fukuda’s beautiful teenage daughter, whose priceless one-of-a-kind living doll has been stolen. And there is the doll itself, growing in size, intelligence, and resentment.

The destinies of all these individuals will converge, and collide, in Punktown.

Why are all these dolls falling out of the sky? Was there a father? —Anne Sexton

PROLOGUE
There were neighborhoods in the city of Paxton where the police did not readily go—if at all. Tin Town, for instance, orWarehouseWay; the former given over mostly to mutants and the latter to squatters in its nominal disused warehouses.

Sometimes fires in such regions were even left to burn themselves out, despite the fact that the city firefighting units were mostly automated in nature. Beaumonde Square, however, was not one of these shunned sectors of Punktown, as the megalopolis had come to be known over the years since Earth colonists had built it upon the humble foundation of the native Choom city that preceded it, like a great cathedral atop an ancient pagan altar. ...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jeffrey Thomas’s milieu of Punktown has been the setting for other of his books, such as the collections Punktown and Punktown: Shades of Grey (with brother Scott Thomas) and the novels Health Agent, Everybody Scream!, and Monstrocity, which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award. Several of these have been translated into German, Russian, and Greek language editions.

Deadstock’s protagonist Jeremy Stake also appears in the story “In His Sights” in the anthology The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction.

When not visiting Punktown, Thomas divides the rest of his time between Massachusetts and Viet Nam.
