While Asia-bound tourists do not face the challenges of early explorers on uncharted seas, the high cost of airfare, the long hours of air travel and political upheavals make the journey as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Time loses its meaning when travelling west to the Far East. On a recent trip to Thailand, we saw sunrise in Halifax, high noon in Vancouver and sunset in Hong Kong, arriving in Bangkok at midnight. Although it seemed like one gruelling 38-hour day, we had crossed the International Dateline and so we arrived in Bangkok a full day later on the calendar.
