Continental Grid Vision Needed
Imagine no electricity existed in the United States. Suddenly, a lab discovers the utility of coursing electrons, and the age of electricity is launched. Assume we immediately learned everything we now know about how to generate electricity using the sun, wind, nuclear power, hydropower, natural gas, geothermal resources and coal.

The Innovators
The pace and magnitude of change facing the energy industry in America is wholly unprecedented. Amid turmoil, creativity and vision arise. That is the basis of this report. The following pages chronicle how the bellwether state of California is wrestling with rising demand for electricity while dealing with environmental concerns in new ways.

Several utility chief executives write about their efforts to address the 21st century needs of their customers and enterprise. A member of a utility board of directors provides his perspective. At the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology a leading scientist discusses the battle to capture and store carbon dioxide underground, perhaps the most complex and significant challenge facing electric companies. A prominent federal regulator talks about steps her powerful agency has taken to spur innovation. Each article is unique and important. Collectively, they describe an industry renaissance.

Tale of Two IPOs
As the market for initial public offerings of stocks began to sputter earlier this year, prospects for companies that wanted to go public dimmed. But as with all things financial, there are always exceptions. Comverge and EnerNOC both launched successful IPOs last spring.

LNG's Bright Prospects
LNG has a grand future. The demand for natural gas exceeds the available supplies and the shortfalls must be recouped. Toward that end, a lot of liquefied natural gas import terminals are on the drawing board. And while only a handful will actually get built, the additional infrastructure allows the United States to expand and diversify its natural gas supply.
