   The standards represent a strong consensus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities that all students should be able to master in language arts at each grade level in the California public school system. At each grade level, the standards are organized by strands: (1) reading, (2) writing, (3) written and oral English language conventions, and (4) listening and speaking. Mastery of these standards will ensure that students enter the worlds of higher education and the workplace armed with the tools needed to be literate, confident communicators.
