Magazine - Eureka Magazine

Eureka Magazine, July 2008Eureka is essential reading for Mechanical Design Engineers in UK Industry. Its role is to discover and disseminate new ideas and technologies which engineers can use in current and future designs.

Eureka specialises in identifying ideas which have the potential to be transferred from one sector to others and explaining where they can make a significant difference. These include military developments which are of benefit to the commercial sector.

Eureka is committed to supporting developments in green, clean and energy saving design, which increase efficiency but also improve our environment.

Eureka aims to be the first to report design breakthroughs as well as delivering new insights into all significant engineering developments applicable to the UK.

Eureka is written by, read by and respected by Design Engineers.

Engineering skills: now the good news
Lou Reade Editor

Just two months after writing about the appalling lack of basic skills in UK industry, it’s time to redress the balance with a look at the upside.

The engineering industry is crying out for keen, intelligent graduates. It’s often said they are in short supply. But if employers looked a bit harder, and in the right places, these comments might start to dry up.

I recently attended the Brunel University degree show and was knocked out by the sheer inventiveness and intelligence of some of the projects. A fuel cap that stops you putting petrol into your diesel tank; a disposable syringe that was designed to prevent re-use; an interactive 3D environment in which sound was as important as vision.

The designs were aimed at real-world problems. Most of the students were personable, eloquent and committed. Speaking to them in this environment revealed far more than any job interview could.

One or two of the designs had already attracted the attention of the University’s commercialisation arm, so details of these were thin on the ground. These students may have a great opportunity: to develop their own technology, as a start-up, from Day One. But the real benefit of the event is for students to show prospective employers their abilities.

It’s not just Brunel: South Bank, Coventry, Loughborough and others run end-of-year degree shows to showcase the talents of their students. And design engineering students have a crucial advantage: they can demonstrate what they’ve been doing with their time, in the form of a design, project or even prototype. A longer report on some of the highlights follows in the next issue.
