Editorial: FP7 faces the global challenges This issue of European Industrial Research magazine examines the transition between the Sixth and the Seventh RTD Framework Programmes from the NMP viewpoint. At a time when work continues on many of the projects selected for funding under FP6, the challenge is to build on experience while grasping new opportunities for enhancing the competitiveness of the EU and building a knowledge-based economy. In a globalised marketplace, EU support for industrial research is crucial – both to boost growth and quality employment, as envisaged in the ‘Lisbon strategy’, and to move towards a sustainable future for the planet. Our main feature explains how this objective has been embodied in the structure of FP7. It also outlines the steps that have been taken to reshape project formats, reduce the administrative overhead, facilitate access to fi nance and generally reduce barriers to entry, especially for the SMEs that make up the bulk of EU industry. Another key impact of the last few years has been the establishment of European Technology Platforms (ETP), providing frameworks for industry-led stakeholders to defi ne R&D priorities in specifi c sectors and horizontal areas such as that embraced by ManuFuture (which addresses the whole field of manufacturing). Spokespersons for several of our National Contact Point organisations, who were interviewed for the ‘Viewpoints’ article on pages 4-5, acknowledge this as an important factor in concentrating the focus of FP7 research. There has already been a strong response to the first calls for proposals, the results of which will be published soon and new projects will start up early in 2008. With a seven-year programme in prospect, the future is exciting. Herbert von Bose Download European Industrial Research, Issue 8 PDF format, 2.11MB, 20 Pages.
