Backbone of the Economy

Dear Reader
It is the backbone of any national economy: with its streets and Internet connections, rail paths and sewage lines, infrastructure forms the fundamental basis for a country’s growing economic and social development.

Wherever new asphalt makes it possible to travel quickly into rural areas, the basis for new commerce arises. Wherever electricity reaches the outlying provinces of a country, a new connection to social advancement is created.

Infrastructure is a key for growth markets to successfully foster their own upward economic movement. Their special challenge: in just a few short years, they must accomplish what it took the countries of Europe and North America decades to complete. The efforts made to date and the funds available from the governments in New Delhi, Brasilia, or Beijing, for example, are therefore not enough to take on this enormous task alone.

In many areas it requires support from the private sector to finance and implement projects. But these much-needed investments could be reduced in the wake of the global financial crisis—especially from foreign investors in North America and Europe. Yet it is too early to have a full and well-founded estimate of the effects on infrastructure investments in China, India or Latin America. Beyond future uncertainties lie today’s challenges, and that is the focus of the current edition of this magazine. The world building blocks—infrastructure in high growth markets, offers an insight into where the biggest requirements are, which sectors promise special opportunities, and how the cooperation with public donors and multinational institutions can be shaped successfully in High Growth Markets.

“High Growth Markets” is also the new title of our KPMG magazine. After years of open and intensive dialogue with our firms clients’ and colleagues, we are convinced that the popular term of “emerging markets“ no longer does justice to nations such as China, India, or Brazil, among others. These countries, which were once up-and-coming, are already world market leaders in many ways. One thing, however, which continues to describe these economically successful countries, is high growth rates—and these are also vital to your entrepreneurial success.

How do you assess the development of these growing economies? Discuss this with us and our member firms’ country specialists, and also consider how we can support you in the current business environment with your investments in high growth markets.
