From the Dean:

“Determined to lay the foundations of an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe, resolved to ensure the economic and social progress of their countries by common action to eliminate the barriers which divide Europe … and calling upon the other peoples of Europe who share their ideal to join in their efforts, [the signatories] have decided to create a European community …”
– Preamble of the Treaty of Rome, 1957

It is our proud legacy that INSEAD was founded three months after the heads of state of France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Rome. We, too, embodied a new type of institution for a new, post-war world.

For many of the founders and first MBA participants of INSEAD, the school epitomised an important part of Europe’s unification. It quickly became an incubator and catalyst for the reinforcement of the economic and social foundations of post-war Europe. However, looking back on our last 47 years, we can see that our school has moved far beyond its original goals – building upon our strong commitment to the future of Europe, we have now extended our pledge to the rest of the world.

As the EU enlarges to incorporate 10 new accession countries in May, several questions emerge: How will the political and economic future of the region evolve, and how will this impact the welfare of its people? The answers are still up for debate.

INSEAD is in a prime position to participate in the ongoing dialogue, because even though our roots reach deep into Europe, our institution does not only represent European ideals but multiple ways of thinking and seeing the world. This allows us to take discussions a step further, beyond our immediate
environment, to address the challenges for the future of Europe in the context of a constantly changing world.

The words of the Treaty of Rome were visionary and revolutionary in their time. We endeavour to achieve similarly visionary goals as we challenge the world’s international leaders to take an active role in creating a global learning community, making a difference by strengthening global enterprises and local communities.

Gabriel Hawawini, Dean
