Our partner institution, the German Office for Foreign Trade, has analyzed the trade statistics for the first months of the year and forecast that Germany will retain its export world champion position in 2008 – a title many predicted would have been lost by the end of the year. The constantly increasing number of important foreign investments in Germany is also a good sign. Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM), the manufacturer of the popular BlackBerry convergent mobile device, has announced that it will locate its European R&D center in the city of Bochum in North Rhine-Westphalia. IHI Charging Systems International, a joint venture between Daimler and Japan’s IHI Group, has begun construction on a new production plant for turbochargers in Thuringia, and Kenersys GmbH (part of the Indian wind energy Kalyani Group) plans significant investment in a wind turbine plant in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These are just a few examples of recent foreign investment activities. Invest in Germany has also been hard at work on a number of exciting new projects attracting inward investment in sectors such as renewable energies, logistics, foodstuffs, electronics, and life sciences. Our service to you will be significantly enhanced by the cooperation agreement which we recently signed with the German Bi-national Chambers Abroad (AHK). The 120 foreign offices of the AHK worldwide will be your new point of contact in all investment-related matters as well. We will be sharing our experiences with the staff of the AHK to ensure that you receive comprehensive information should you have an interest in investing in Germany. I hope the latest issue of our magazine – with its cover story about the sustainable solutions of the German automotive industry, a selection of success stories, industry reports, R&D stories, and innovation news – makes for interesting and informative reading.
