Is Your WLAN Helping You Comply with Security Guidelines of the PCI Standard? This white paper provides an overview of security threats in a wireless LAN (WLAN) environment, many of which go unnoticed.

It discusses how HP ProCurve can help you deploy a secure and managed Wi-Fi infrastructure that can defend itself against wireless threats and help you comply with PCI guidelines.

INTRODUCTION
The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard was created in 2004 by major credit card companies—American Express, Discover Financial, JCB, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa International—to provide security and privacy for customers’ credit card data and personal information. The PCI standard sets specific guidelines for the storage, processing, and transmittal of all associated data in order to protect cardholders from identity theft.

PCI compliance is mandatory for all merchants that store, process, or transmit credit card data through retail stores, mail order, telephone order, and online sites. Retailers that are not in compliance are subject to fi nes or suspension of credit card processing privileges. Therefore, retailers must carefully plan, deploy, maintain, and test all network components, servers, and applications connected to cardholder information.

CONCLUSION
In today’s ultra-competitive retail environment, wireless LANs are a critical network infrastructure component, providing mobility, productivity, and competitive advantage.

However, along with the benefi ts of this technology come new security threats that can compromise total network security and corporate reputation. HP ProCurve offers an enterprise-ready, standards-based WLAN infrastructure and security solution that is PCI compliant and offers the highest levels of protection.

The HP ProCurve Intelligent Mobility Solution provides a multi-layered approach to client and RF security. First, the HP ProCurve controller and access point infrastructure apply robust authentication, encryption, fi ltering, and VLAN tagging policies on a per-user basis at the network perimeter.

This provides integrity for traffi c that traverses the LAN backbone. Next, the RF Manager provides 24x7 wireless intrusion detection and prevention with a layer of security that automatically identifi es and blocks all categories of wireless network attacks and vulnerabilities.

Just as in wired networks, there is no guarantee that multiple layers of defense will mitigate all threats, since hackers are always devising new penetration schemes. However, when deploying, confi guring, activating, and maintaining the HP ProCurve Intelligent Mobility Solution with its best-in-class security functionality, merchants can be confi dent in the security of their wireless networks.
