|
Monday, 29 January 2007 |
|
Established in 1915, Monthly Labor Review is the principal journal of fact, analysis, and research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor. Each month, economists, statisticians, and experts from the Bureau join with private sector professionals and State and local government specialists to provide a wealth of research in a wide variety of fields—the labor force, the economy, employment, inflation, productivity, occupational injuries and illnesses, wages, prices, and many more.
This issue opens with a three-piece review of recent trends in the construction industry and its relationship to the broader economy. John P. Mullins documents the differences in the responses to the business cycle that have marked construction employment in recent recessions and recoveries. In the most recent cycle, the residential and nonresidential construction components have had very different employment trends. |

Time Magazine is running an article called "China Takes on the World" in its latest issue, whose cover features a bright, golden star rising from the Great Wall and the headline, "Dawn of a New Dynasty."
Time is absolutely right: this will be China's century. But the media's indefatiguable enthusiasm for making these kinds of proclamations.
If you're a sinophile (which I wager you might be if you are reading this site), the article might not tell you anything you didn't already know, but it's a great primer for anyone wanting to understand China's role in the world, what it wants, what it fears, and how to work with the world's next superpower.

Readers also look forward to the annually updated Fortune lists, which include the "40 Richest Under 40," "Most Powerful Women," and the "Fortune 500," an exclusive collection of companies whose employees are undoubtedly Fortune readers as well. --Mace Bainwright
