SAVING GRACE In uncertain economic times, we tend to keep a watchful eye on the bottom line. For planners, that means seeking value for their meeting buck. But there’s no need to sacrifice the “bang” to spare the budget. You can wow the crowd whether you spend a lot or a lot less. We offered this concept in “Splurge vs. Save,” a feature in our August 2007 issue, in which the focus was on food and beverage choices, both pricey and frugal, as well as two options for a colorful floral centerpiece separated by $80 in outlay. Reader response was immediate and enthusiastic: You told us you loved it and wanted more of these moneysaving tips. As a direct consequence, this month we debut a new column called Luxe or Less (see page 18), each installment of which will present two suggestions for a high-end meeting or event element juxtaposed with a budget-friendly alternative that achieves essentially the same effect. Of course, such great ideas are not the sole province of M&C’s editorial staff, however resourceful our team might be. In our business, ingenious solutions, whether arrived at serendipitously or with deliberate forethought, routinely make the rounds of meeting planners.
