Meeting & Convention Magazine, April 2008M&C, Perfection in Planning!

M&C magazine is the definitive resource for meetings industry news featuring issues and trends, practical how-to features and destination guides for more than 70,000 meeting professionals who plan and book over one million meetings annually. Monthly, 13 issues per year (including the annual Gavel issue).

Since 1965, Meetings & Conventions magazine has been helping meeting and event planners in corporations, associations, incentive houses and independent planning companies excel at their jobs and effectively manage their careers.

In our award-winning monthly print publication and here at M&C Online, we offer in-depth features, informative columns, destination insights, news analysis, original research and much more. And, our new, improved website offers additional tools: an articles archive, a powerful facility search engine, breaking news and other helpful features -- literally at your fingertips.

On the Cover: Serving Two Masters
There’s a certain unique subset of meeting planners who are employed by third-party firms yet embedded in the offices — and corporate cultures — of their clients. Here’s a special report on the challenges and rewards of this offbeat kind of dual citizenship.

SAVING GRACE

In uncertain economic times, we tend to keep a watchful eye on the bottom line. For planners, that means seeking value for their meeting buck. But there’s no need to sacrifice the “bang” to spare the budget. You can wow the crowd whether you spend a lot or a lot less.

We offered this concept in “Splurge vs. Save,” a feature in our August 2007 issue, in which the focus was on food and beverage choices, both pricey and frugal, as well as two options for a colorful floral centerpiece separated by $80 in outlay. Reader response was immediate and enthusiastic: You told us you loved it and wanted more of these moneysaving tips.

As a direct consequence, this month we debut a new column called Luxe or Less (see page 18), each installment of which will present two suggestions for a high-end meeting or event element juxtaposed with a budget-friendly alternative that achieves essentially the same effect.

Of course, such great ideas are not the sole province of M&C’s editorial staff, however resourceful our team might be. In our business, ingenious solutions, whether arrived at serendipitously or with deliberate forethought, routinely make the rounds of meeting planners. If you have some thoughts for this column that you’d like to share with your peers, drop me a line at lcioffi@mcmag.com.
