Visit Prison Living Magazine Official Website EDITOR'S LETTER: Dear readers, Many times it has been overwhelming and challenging to compile the articles, sell the advertising and raise money for printing and postage; but here we are one year later. I have to commend our staff members who have worked relentlessly to overcome all the obstacles. Thanks also go to the donors, advertisers and subscribers who believed there was a need and that a positive impact could be made with this publication, as envisioned by Michele Milikan, the founder and editor. Like the 1966 musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “a funny thing happened on the way to” printing the last issue. The 33,000-prisoner database of the Arizona Department of Corrections was no longer available to us. This put in jeopardy all of the advertisers who were expecting a 50,000 to 60,000 circulation of the magazine. Our staff met for their normal Monday meeting and asked, “Are we out of business today and do we have to refund all the money to subscribers and advertisers?” Immediately they thought, “Since our local distribution is shut down, maybe it is time to go national.” After prayer and brainstorming, we decided to make a list of all the private prisons’ wardens and chaplains in the United States. We called or emailed them to see if there was an interest in the magazine for their inmate population. In less than one week, we had more guaranteed requests to deliver the magazine than we could fill with the 60,000 magazines set to print. Within two weeks, they were printed, mailed and delivered to more than 40 states. Requests for subscriptions and letters started pouring in from all over the country. As you will notice, there are some changes to this issue. In “Behind the Pages,” Carl Ridgeway explains how he began to work at PLM and is now the business manager of the magazine. Because he did time and has business expertise, he has provided insight to the content and coordination with the prison systems (read page 7). We have also changed some content by your requests, including additional prisoner art pages, book reviews and more features. We continued the centerfold (due to many requests), but we have removed it from the front cover (that has a new look too!). We have begun to focus our resource page nationally, with an emphasis on the states with the highest distribution and subscriptions. With the overwhelming interest and growing subscription base, we may also have to increase the number of copies with the next issue. Thank you and God bless you all. Set as favorite Bookmark
