Prison Living Magazine, Volume 2, Issue 2Prisoners Are People Too!

Prison Living Magazine’s Mission Statement:

  • Provide articles of inspiration, motivation and information that prisoners can apply in their unique lives.
  • Help the general public see that prisoners are people also; some educated, artistic, skilled and eager to make positive contributions to society.
  • Encourage families of prisoners and victims.

Eidtor's Letter:

Dear readers,
I have just returned from a men’s conference that I organized. It was interesting to watch the interaction and relationships develop between these men of diversified backgrounds. About one-forth of the men I invited were ex-felons. The balance was made up of a psychiatrist, heavy equipment salesman, song writer/musician, high-level marketing executive, pastor and others. The pastor/speaker for the weekend shared that earlier in his life he had done some of the same, and worse, things that the ex-felons did, however, he was never caught. The men related on equal ground with no awareness of any differences.

I was reminded once again how “prisoners are people too” and how we foolishly stereotype people who have been to prison. Some of the worst criminals may be your next-door neighbor or someone who appears to be an outstanding citizen, but has just never been caught or put in prison.

Having hired many ex-felons, I have found them to be some of the most outstanding citizens, competent workers and excellent employees. So, we need to be careful about making judgments of people until we get to know who they really are. “You can’t tell a book by its cover.” You have to read it in order to know it well. In that regard, you have to spend time with prisoners to know who they really are.

It is with gratitude that we have received the many responses to my last editorial. We have received many helpful suggestions. One 13-page letter of helpful information from Christophe at Southhampton Correctional Center in Virginia was especially a delight. It is a real pleasure to receive help and counsel from a prisoner who obviously has more experience and knowledge in publishing a magazine than we have. The letter was a great encouragement. It was filled with resources to develop our subscription base to prisoners’ families, potential advertisers and that he has the potential of writing for the magazine. Thank you, Chris! Keep it coming and we look forward to what all of you have to say.

We have tried to keep a balance of the prisoner’s perspective, the free world person’s perspective and a religious perspective. The challenge is great and we may not always succeed. We enjoy hearing from you as subscribers. It helps keep us on track.

Finally, congratulations to Jason Lee Starnes from the Maury Correctional Institution in North Carolina. He is the winner of the Mistakes Contest.

Sincerely,
Dave Ritzenthaler
