We’re now seven years into the new millennium, seven years into my leadership role at Xerox and seven years into what Xerox calls, “The New Business of Printing®.”

When I became president and chief operating officer in May 2000, one of my first public events was to participate in the rollout of our vision for The New Business of Printing® and several enabling digital color presses at drupa. That vision is just as relevant today. Just-in-time, one-to-one and e-based services continue to transform our industry, enabling graphic communications providers to profit and grow by meeting customers’ specific business needs—rather than simply manufacturing print pieces. And color continues to be the highlight with Xerox color presses producing the highest volume of pages in the industry. Last year, more than 30 billion color pages were printed on Xerox technology.

The thousands of print providers who’ve signed on and developed the right business model, the right workflow and the right technology over these seven years are achieving the promised profit and growth. As a result, our vision has become a compass for the industry. And the experience we’ve gained from developing it, refining it and living it has been immensely valuable, both to us and to our customers.

We also know that our approach still has considerable legs. Because seven years into the digital color printing revolution, only about 23 percent of the 23,500 commercial printers in the United States offer digital printing, according to the PIA/GATF 2006 Print Atlas.

Most industry observers believe that number will rise dramatically in the next two to three years. Print providers will sign on to digital for the same reasons the industry’s pioneers did. Their customers increasingly expect the fast turnarounds, short runs and personalization options available to them only from digital printing. They want electronic alternatives and complements to print. They seek innovative approaches to book manufacturing, photo printing, direct marketing campaigns and many other applications that are valuable to them and profitable to the provider.

Moreover, the print providers who haven’t addressed these digital opportunities are increasingly mired in a commodity business that requires them to cut costs—and profits. These trends affect both commercial and in-plant operations whether large or small, public or private. Those who answer the call open the door to many new ways to profit.

They also invariably need help instituting the new services.
