FEATURES
Solar: Could Ontario be the next Germany?
If the Green Energy and Green Economy Act is passed as expected, Ontario will become the first North American jurisdiction with an incentive system modelled after the successful German feed-in tariffs (FITs). And, as with Germany, this is expected to fuel rapid growth of the clean energy market in the province.

AREVA MULTIBRID’s series production: An ambitious growth path
In mid-2007 MULTIBRID GmbH inaugurated a new assembly plant for its innovative 5 MW M5000 offshore wind turbine model in Bremerhaven, Germany. The same year technology company AREVA Group acquired a majority share in the company and this year, it plans to install six turbines at the German Alpha Ventus North Sea research wind farm. Heading offshore is the latest and crucial phase for this relatively young company.

Solar trackers: Facing the sun
Trackers, which adapt to both the daily and seasonal passage of the sun across the sky, are a technology that enables optimization of the incident angle of sunlight on solar panels. This can increase electricity production over simple flat panels by around a third, and some claim by as much as 40% in some regions.

Winning dixie: Drawing in the Southeastern US
The Southeastern USA’s apparent resistance to renewable energy, or at least any national mandate to build the resource, stems from a combination of factors – among them a long-standing concern about federal control and support for states’ rights. The region also has strong coal and nuclear industries, and some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation. But are these concerns justified?

Optimizing operations: Improving dispatch system performance
Matching supply and demand while maintaining grid stability is an issue that has long troubled the utility sector and it is an issue that is growing more important as the proportion of intermittent renewables on the grid increases. Spanish transmission system operator Red Eléctrica de España executed one solution to improve their dispatch performance.

Sempra thinking big on solar: Nevada’s thinfilm power plant could expand to 58 MW
Construction of the 10 MW El Dorado Energy Solar plant – the largest thin-film plant in operation in the Americas and Sempra Energy’s first solar power project – commenced July 2008 and was completed six months later in December. It involved the installation of more than 167,000 PV modules on 80 acres (32 hectares) of desert property designated as a renewable energy zone and leased from Boulder City.
