Reducing Gun Violence: Community Problem Solving in Atlanta
by Arthur L. Kellermann, Dawna Fuqua-Whitley, and Constance S. Parramore
National Institute of Justice , June 2006
The fifth report in NIJ's Reducing Gun Violence series examines the
lessons learned from an ambitious program implemented during the late
1990s in Atlanta to reduce juvenile gun violence.
The city adopted a
problem-solving approach within an existing program called "Project
PACT." Atlanta PACT formed strategic partnerships with Federal, State,
and local law enforcement and community-based groups to break the chain
of illegal events leading up to juvenile gun violence. Some of the
partnerships and strategies formed then endure today within Project Safe Neighborhoods. The report describes the program's methods and lessons for other communities.

The Business of News: a Challenge for Journalism’s Next Generation
by Cynthia Gorney, June 2002
Carnegie Corporation of New York , Forum on the Public Interest and the Business of News
American journalists have a major responsibility: working on democracy’s free press to inform citizens and officials about local, national and world events aswell as to provide a measure of public accountability for all institutions and their members.
In June 2002, a number of prominent journalists, publishers, news executives and deans of journalism and communications schools came to a daylong Carnegie Corporation forum to discuss a concern raised by many of us;namely, that the nation’s truly admirable journalism profession currently lacks sufficient tools to do its work—and, hence, democracy’s work—in a competitive environment of parsimonious corporate support and expanding global complexity.

Ruassia: Facing the Future
A Report of Carnegie Corporation of New York
By Adam N. Stulberg, 2001
Carnegie Corporation of New York Convenes Experts to Assess Russia
Ten Years After the Dissolution of the Soviet Union.
An
assessment of Russia ten years after the fall of Communism focuses on
the complexities, challenges and capacity of Russia to create a
powerful democratic society and argues strongly that the United States
has a vested interest in strengthening ties with its former superpower
competitor. It calls for an "extensive re-engagement" by America with
Russia that avoids "the pitfalls of either micromanaging or abandoning
the cause of reform, while building on realistic expectations of
Russia's internal development."

A report from the Annenberg School for Communication
University of Southern California , 2000
A national survey of gay and lesbian journalists' perceptions of coverage of
sexual-orientation issues.
Our goal in the 2000 survey was threefold: to assess how lesbians and gays are treated in present-day newsrooms; to assess coverageof lesbians and gays by news institutions; and last, but notleast, to assess the degree of change over the past 10 years.
In this landmark study, lesbian and gay print journalists were asked to assess their own workplace conditions as well as coverage of lesbian and gay issues.
