To ensure reliable, accurate, and timely data, which are necessary to monitor the progress of education in the United States, Congress has mandated that the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) produce an annual report, The Condition of Education.
This year’s report presents 46 indicators of important developments and trends in U.S. education. These indicators focus on participation and persistence in education, student performance and other measures of achievement, the environment for learning, and resources for education. |

‘And of course, the information society’s very life blood is freedom. It is freedom that enables citizens everywhere to benefit from knowledge, journalists to do their essential work, and citizens to hold government accountable. Without openness, without the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers, the information revolution will stall, and the information society we hope to build will be stillborn.’ - Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General |

The year 2008/09 presented an unprecedented set of challenges for the Bank as it responded to the ongoing financial crisis and the significant economic downturn now affecting economies globally. It is difficult to overstate the extent of the issues that the Bank’s Executive has faced.
The crisis has required them to take key monetary policy decisions, design and implement innovative market facilities to improve liquidity and credit conditions, and make a substantial input into wider financial sector policy initiatives and banking reform legislation. It has been a tough year on any measure. |

The domestic debate over illegal immigration is radicalized. Large-scale demonstrations in March and April 2006 were organized to oppose proposed criminal sanctions against migrants and those individuals and organizations, such as the Central American Resource Center, which aid them.
Meanwhile grassroots organizations, such as the Minuteman Project, have formed to patrol the vast, unprotected desert regions of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to prevent illegal border crossings. As one extreme seeks to fortify the entire US/Mexico international boundary to prevent more Mexicans from entering the United States, the other faction seeks blanket amnesty (and expedited citizenship) for all illegal aliens. |
