From The Editor:

Rigzoners,
It’s an interesting time to report on the oil and gas industry. Oil prices and global demand are at their highest, and as companies grow, the industry is constantly striving to meet the market’s need for an ever-growing workforce. Oil and gas is no longer just for the good ol’ boys – and today’s upstream horizons refl ect that.

With such a dynamic industry, recruitment and retention are a top priority, which has greatly affected how much the average (and above average) industry professional earns. Interested in what your colleagues make? The cover story this month, “Petro Payoff” on page 30, offers the industry’s best compilation of salary information for the upstream market. Using data gathered in the 2007 Rigzone Salary Survey, this article includes interesting analysis and real numbers to help you position yourself and your company in the marketplace.

Additionally, this issue takes an in-depth look at communication and data transfer technologies serving remote oil and gas locations. From offshore platforms to frontier onshore wells, the products and services that meet the everyday needs of the industry are continually reaching farther. “Oilfi eld Communications,” starting on page 38, gives unique insight into the world of communication technology from experts around the globe. From new services to upcoming challenges, these articles provide a comprehensive guide to how the industry keeps in touch.

This issue’s Area Focus delves into HSE improvements in the Barents Sea (page 22) while the Employee Development department tackles employee retention in a rapidly growing environment. As always, Rigzone Reporter includes extensive industry data (starting on page 8), and it predicts the future in “Rig Outlook” (page 12). Looking for a new position? Don’t miss the industry’s most-used job board, Rigzone’s Career Center listings begin on page 56.
