PERSPECTIVES Since my last message, a lot of terrific things have happened for us at South Coast Medical Center. First and foremost, we have a major addition to our medical staff: Joseph M. Ruggio, M.D., FACP, FACC, FSCAI, and his 18-member team of top-rated cardiovascular physicians are opening offices on the hospital’s campus. SCMC’s alliance with Dr. Ruggio has allowed us to bring the services of this nationally recognized cardiologist, who is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology, to the residents of South Orange County. Dr. Ruggio is a pioneer in the development and implementation of high-quality, cost-effective cardiovascular services. Dr. Ruggio is the founder and president of Pacific Cardiovascular Associates (PCA), a medical corporation comprising 18 top-rated physicians who have saved thousands of lives over the past 22 years. Be sure to read more about Dr. Ruggio and Pacific Cardiovascular Associates in this issue of South Coast Health and see why SCMC’s alliance with this team is nothing short of extraordinary. But there’s even more good news. If you’ve walked through the main floor of our hospital recently, you have noticed that our renovation is complete. Our second floor is virtually unrecognizable since the overhaul, with exquisite new colors on the walls, new carpet and new furniture throughout the lobby. When our patients and their families come through our hospital, we know it can be an emotionally difficult time, so we want our guests to be surrounded by beauty and comfort. Meanwhile, we continue to move ahead with our plans for a senior housing project that is both market-rate and affordable. Although Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger extended the seismic retrofit deadline to the year 2020, we have not changed our timeline. We’re moving ahead with the plans for the housing and entitlements so that we will have the funding to build the new patient care building rather than retrofitting the old tower. As you read through this magazine, which features one of our most treasured supporters, Cheryl Post, on the cover, you will learn about the latest news from the SCMC Foundation. You also will learn important information about our physicians and services. With South Coast Health magazine, we strive to keep our community informed about all the advances and progress at South Coast Medical Center. Enjoy this issue of South Coast Health!
