Special Report on Medicaid: Bridging the Gap Between Care And Cost

  Medicaid is the ultimate health care safety net for nearly 60 million Americans, largely low-income children and their parents, pregnant women, senior citizens and the disabled. But it comes with a hefty pricetag: $329 billion in 2004 alone. States and the federal government are determined to cut its budget-breaking growth rate.(Asiaing.com) That may be necessary-but will cost-cutting measures strangle the program's capacity to provide vital health care? What may be the unintended consequences of well-meaning reforms to Medicaid.

With separate programs in each of the 50 states, Medicaid is the perfect topic for the Center's first report. It affords an opportunity to analyze the real-world experiences of states, highlight examples of what works and what doesn't, and inform a crucial policy debate that will affect the lives of millions of Americans.
