The 2007 Complete Baseball Record BookWelcome to the 2007 edition of the Complete Baseball Record Book. For the first time, Sporting News is publishing this book electronically and making it available at no cost.

The names of those who put together the first edition of the Sporting News Record Book after the 1908 season are lost to the mists of history. We can imagine without too much difficulty that they were all newspapermen with perhaps a secretary doing some typing and that their boss, Charles Spink, probably parted with no more than a few extra bucks to pay for work that went beyond their usual duties.

The book they produced was, in truth, quite small. It measured only 3" by 5 1/4" and had but 36 pages. But it set a precedent that has endured for nearly a century...

The 2007 edition of this book is the fourth to bear my name on the title page, but it is, in many ways, still the product of the labors of those who have gone before. We hope you like what you see, and we would be pleased to hear from you. Most especially, we encourage communications that point out mistakes, typographical errors and omissions that are an inevitable part of the process. We plan to make next year’s Record Book even better than this one, and we humbly ask for your assistance. (Steve Gietschier, Editor)
