2008 California Election CalendarThe 2008 California Elections Calendar is intended to provide general information about the nomination and election of candidates, the qualification of ballot measures, and other election-related issues. It does not have the force and effect of law, regulation or rule.

It is distributed with the understanding that the Secretary of State is not rendering legal advice. The individual, organization, or candidate using the calendar must not consider it to be a substitute for legal counsel. In case of conflict or amendments to law, regulation or rule that take effect after publication of this document, the law, regulation or rule will apply.

Unless otherwise indicated, all code section references are to the California Elections Code.

Preface:

I have prepared this California Election Calendar for the 2008 election cycle, highlighting the important dates that people need to be aware of as they plan for the February 5, 2008, Presidential Primary, the June 3, 2008, Direct Primary, and the November 4, 2008, General Election.

Elections in California require a great deal of work, advance preparation, and expertise from a wide variety of people. We are fortunate to have an elections community made up of dedicated and innovative professionals who are deeply committed to conducting honest, efficient, transparent, and successful statewide elections.

This calendar contains information that I’m certain will be useful to all elections officials, candidates running for office, public officials, members of the news media, and the general public.

I look forward to what promises to be a very exciting presidential election year!

Debra Bowen

About Elections Division:

Welcome to the Secretary of State Elections and Voter Information Page. We are still developing some portions of this site. Ultimately by browsing through this site, you will find information on ballot initiatives, candidate filing, and voter registration.

The Secretary of State's Elections Division has a wide variety of responsibilities in administering elections in California. Our division is responsible for everything from certifying the official lists of candidates to determining which types of voting systems are acceptable for use in California.

The Elections Division advises candidates and local elections officials on the qualifications and requirements for running for office, provides guidance on choosing acceptable candidate ballot designations, and determines the order of the candidates on the ballot.

The Elections Division tracks and certifies ballot initiatives. If a state measure goes on the ballot, the Elections Division has verified that it has met the requirements for placement.

Once those candidates are placed on the ballot, the Elections Division coordinates the tabulation of the votes from each county on election night. The Elections Division is responsible for producing the official Statements of Vote after each election. These are the official compilation of vote totals for a given election.

Our Division also has a comprehensive Voter Registration and Outreach Team. This team's scope of responsibilities include printing registration forms, encouraging registration and voter turnout, and producing several voter information publications.

Please visit us often as we add more information to this site for this and future elections.
