Welcome to the 2008 CSO Security Buyers Guide. This year’s issue is more comprehensive than ever and will prove a handy reference tool for you over the next 12 months. In response to discussions with Australian IT executives over the last year we’ve included more security-focused articles and a selection of case studies from Check Point, Custom Technology, earthwave, RSA, SmoothWall, Sophos, WatchGuard. We have also eliminated duplicate listings. You’ll fi nd the familiar capability matrix tables on pages 38 and 39 which enable you to see, at a glance, which security vendors have solutions that are appropriate for your organisation. The guide is then split into sections that include application security, business continuity, content and e-mail management, infrastructure, managed services, network secuity and network access control. New for 2008 is the capability colour coding system. Mimicking the capability matrix, the new dot system carries throughout the Guide as an easy reference addition to all listings. Also featured this year is a new section called the Security Research Library, your guide on free access to third-party security research. By consulting our comprehensive library of reports (all offered by reliable third-party sources), your company will gain extensive insight and landscape knowledge. Small-to-medium-sized businesses must face up to the fact that they will be targeted in greater numbers, and will face more and more sophisticated and stealthy attacks. Webcrime 2.0 “The largest threats to security in 08-09 will be the rapid adoption of new, innovative approaches to the delivery of IT services within organisations,” says Andrew Walls, research director, security risk and privacy at Gartner. By many expert accounts, Web-based cybercrime will become ever more refi ned and elegant in the coming year, and the cybercriminals will be devoting more of their attention to Web 2.0 sites than ever before. According to Walls, as organisations adopt new methods of IT service delivery, they are also creating new areas of vulnerability. “Multiple, alternative approaches to IT delivery (such as Software as a Service, Infrastructure on Demand, and Web 2.0) present attractive cost/benefi t ratios but radically change the tools, skills and processes required to maintain acceptable levels of security assurance,” he says. “The malicious attacks will migrate to these new environments as organisations transition their operations.” Indeed, he warns, this is already occurring. ...
