The Londoner, March 2008

Magazine - The Londoner

The Londoner, March 2008The Londoner is a newsletter from the Mayor of London. Launched in December 2002, it is published 10 times a year and is delivered to Londoners via a free door drop. Copies are also available from libraries, a selection of tube stations and City Hall.

The Londoner highlights the work of the Greater London Authority Group and keeps Londoners up to date about the key issues affecting life in the capital.

It is an essential source of information about the work of the Mayor of London, Transport for London, the London Development Agency and the Metropolitan Police.

Every month we cover a range of issues including transport, policing, health and the environment. Readers are given a chance to have their say and participate in current debates through our Letters and Talking Point pages. We also publish details of how Londoners can take part in public consultations.

The total number of offences fell by over 6 per cent last year compared to 2006 – with reductions in almost every category. The Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Paul Stephenson, said the figures showed that ‘London was becoming safer’.

Violent crime fell by almost 17,500 incidents since 2006, with grievous bodily harm down 12 per cent and knife crime down 13 per cent. The capital’s homicide rate (murder and manslaughter plus infanticide) fell by 7 per cent in 2007. Homicide is down 28 per cent since 2003 – falling from 222 to 160 in that period. Reported rapes were down almost 15 per cent.

At the same time the percentage of crimes resulting in offenders being charged, cautioned or receiving another penalty has increased. This pattern of falling crime in London has coincided with dramatic increases in police and PCSO numbers, from 25,430 in 2000 to 35,256 this year.

While crime overall has fallen consistently for five years, gun-enabled crime – crime involving guns and nonlethal weapons – rose by 4 per cent last year. However, this was almost entirely due to an increase in CS gas and pepper spray offences, rather than use of guns. Serious gun crime actually dropped by 2.2 per cent. ...
