The most remarkable window that Americans have ever had into how their country is governed. These volumes mark the beginning of a major publishing event: the complete transcription of recently declassified presidential recordings, annotated by a remarkable group of scholars working with the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs.

John F. Kennedy: Volumes 1-3 covers the period of July-October 1962 and reveals Kennedy and top advisers negotiating such events as U.S. covert action in Brazil, racial unrest at the University of Mississippi, and the most dangerous moments of the Cold War: the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The books are accompanied by a multimedia CD-ROM (runs on both Windows and Macintosh computers) that features the full audio recordings with links to official meeting schedules, notes, and other information. Together the books and CD will allow entrance into the top-level decision making of the most powerful nation in the world during wrenching judgments about war and peace, civil rights, the domestic and global economy, and much more.

This site is designed as a service to the research community by making freely available all of the presidential recordings, along with relevant research materials, so that scholars, teachers, students, and the public can hear and use these remarkable tapes for themselves.
