The people of Hong Kong are proud of what they have achieved, but they are not complacent. They know that continued success requires hard work and innovation, and in Hong Kong’s typical “can do” spirit will press on with their quest for quality and progress. In this booklet "This is Hong Kong" you will learn a little more about Hong Kong and its people – and what makes them tick. Asia's World City - For the Chinese people, 2008 is a year of historic significance – for the first time the country plays host to the Olympic Games. Hong Kong also has a role to play in this historic undertaking - we are a proud co-host city, staging the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events. With a long history of equine involvement and the professional expertise of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, world-class quarantine and vaccination regimes for racehorses and state-of-the-art equine hospital and laboratories, Hong Kong is a natural choice. Indeed, with its prime location at the heart of East Asia, its excellent connectivity, world-class hotels, an eclectic mix of East and West, Old and New, and a multitude of dining, leisure and retail opportunities, Hong Kong makes the perfect host for international and regional sporting events. Hong Kong is Asia’s world city. We take pride in our cosmopolitan lifestyle, cultural diversity, dynamism, quest for quality and in our assurance of a level playing field for all who seek opportunities here. And as Beijing’s co-host, Hong Kong embraces the Olympic ideals of solidarity, friendship, fair play and equality – ideals which go hand in hand with the city’s core values. In the spirit of Hong Kong and the Olympic Games, we welcome you! "…New York City, London, and Hong Kong, three cities linked by a shared economic culture, have come to be both examples and explanations of globalization. Connected by long-haul jets and fiber-optic cable, and spaced neatly around the globe, the three cities have (by accident — nobody planned this) created a financial network that has been able to lubricate the global economy, and, critically, ease the entry into the modern world of China, the giant child of our century. Understand this network of cities — Nylonkong, we call it — and you understand our time." “A Tale of Three Cities,” TIME Magazine, Jan 28, 2008 edition PDF format, 4.9MB. Provided by Brand Hong Kong. CONTENTS: OLYMPIC EQUESTRIAN EVENTS 2 – 3 Hong Kong is Cosmopolitan As a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. With its rights and freedoms upheld by the Basic Law, Hong Kong remains Asia’s most cosmopolitan city, an open and pluralistic society where people of all nationalities celebrate their own culture, beliefs and pastimes. East meets West – Chinese New Year, Christmas, Easter and the Mid-Autumn Festival are celebrated festivals and bank holidays. Western celebrations such as Halloween and Valentine’s Day are very popular, while traditional events such as the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which features contestants climbing a “bun tower”, draw huge crowds every year. International schools – With a total of 147 international schools (74 kindergartens, 48 primary and 25 secondary), Hong Kong has more than any other Asian city, offering a familiar learning environment for all students, and over nine curricula, including UK, US, Australian, French, Swiss-German, Japanese, Canadian, Korean and Singaporean. Global village – About 7.7 per cent of Hong Kong’s 6.9 million population, or 534 000 people, hold foreign passports. Of these, the largest groups come from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, US, India, Canada, Nepal, Pakistan, Australia, Malaysia, UK and Japan. Chinese and English are both official languages. Religious freedom – Chinese temples, Christian churches, Muslim mosques, Jewish synagogues and other places of worship give all major religions a focus for their faith. Set as favorite Bookmark
