The world in one city

With people from all over the world making London their home, the city’s culture, arts and food are globally inspired. Experience some of London’s diversity through its many festivals, exhibitions and events

London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world and this is reflected in the food, music, shops and festivals which can be found across the capital. In fact, in London there are over 300 different languages spoken and over 70 international cuisines available, many of which are found in distinct areas such as Chinatown or Brick Lane for Indian and Bangladeshi food.

Throughout the year London hosts a number of festivals and events to celebrate its diversity and encourage people to come together. Annual events such as the Notting Hill Carnival in August always draw large crowds from across the city to celebrate Caribbean culture.

For many years, London has recognised the importance of the Chinese population which is now around 80,000 people. Chinese New Year is a focal point for festivities and this year it is going to be even bigger.

London is already committed to organising a London-wide cultural festival this year in the build up to the Beijing Olympic Games which will start around Chinese New Year.

Chinese culture is also being celebrated at the British Museum as they host ‘The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army’. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition explores one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century and runs until 6th April.

That’s not the only celebration of ancient artefacts in the capital this year as The O2 hosts ‘Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs’, an exhibition dedicated to the world’s most famous pharaoh. It has been 30 years since this amazing collection of exhibits from Ancient Egypt has been in the capital. Make sure you make time to see this amazing collection as it will not be displayed in any other location in the UK.
