With the price of fuel still almost twice what it was a year ago, airlines are cutting down on aircraft weight, looking to create their own version of carrier-lite. They have already trimmed hundreds of pounds from each plane by switching food carts, buying lighter life vests and cutting down on the amount of potable water they carry.

They’ve turned back the scales even more by charging for extra bags, thus cutting down passenger baggage weight. Now, some are looking at canceling onboard magazines or even charging more for heavier customers.
