Welcome to the Family

Travel Weekly: Family Getaways Spring 2009As Editor-in-Chief, it’s my honor to welcome you to the premiere issue of Family Getaways. Those of you in the western U.S. may recognize the names on the right side of this page as the staff of our parent magazine, TravelAge West. For new readers, some background is probably in order.

For 40 years, TravelAge West has been bringing travel industry news, destination, product and trend information to travel agents in the 14 western states. It has the largest travel trade readership in the West and its staff of experienced writers and editors travel the world reviewing properties, interviewing travel executives and chasing down stories for our readers.

As a result, over the last four years, the magazine has garnered more than 30 editorial and design awards. It’s our intention to bring that same commitment to excellence to Family Getaways.

As the father of two and an avid traveler, I am excited to be heading up Family Getaways. Over the past several years, the travel industry has witnessed signifi cant growth in the family-travel segment, and today, family travel is more akin to small-group travel — with people of various ages and differing interests all traveling together. ...

Families and multigenerational groups are increasingly interested in the culture and history of the destinations they visit. And, as the family vacation evolves from summer road trips to more sophisticated international journeys, so too are the travel needs of this segment.
