Gridlock

To hear the FAA and other industry supporters tell it, the futuristic Next Generation air traffic control system, or NextGen, should sport a cape as it employs its superpowers to solve all of air travel’s ills.

But detractors say the reality might prove to be kryptonite, leaving the aviation industry in an even more weakened state.

“NextGen is expected to triple capacity, boost controller productivity, reduce FAA operating costs, lessen impact of high energy costs and reduce the environmental impact of aviation,” the U.S. Department of Transportation inspector general’s office reported in September.

All of that for a mere $40 billion investment by the government and industry users over the next couple of decades.

But the U.S. Senate and the DOT’s inspector general say NextGen plans don’t explain just how the system would reduce delays and congestion.

And for all its bluster, NextGen still can’t change the weather, meaning “there will still be massive disruptions with extreme weather,” said Robert Poole, the aviation expert for the Reason Foundation, a think tank. ...
